• Have a tight corner and need the height of the two largest bed parts to be modified to fit?
• Yes, we can do that. We will modify the headboard and footboard of the bed (only these two parts) and adjust the height into two smaller pieces that are adjoining. One piece will be 54" high, the other, 26" for a combined height of our standard 80". There will be a seam between the pieces that we do our best to make as clean as possible (we can't make it disappear, we're not magicians), but the strength will be there to use the bed as you normally would.
• We charge for fabrication time only to make these modifications and it is applicable to any bed model we currently sell.

Standard FinishOur standard finish option is a powder coating process where a layer of specially treated pigment in the form of a dry powder is applied to the steel surface and then super-heated, undergoing a chemical reaction as the temperature rises. The resulting finish when the powder melts is a hardened solid-colored surface. Powder Coating is more ecologically friendly, and also creates a much more durable surface that is less-easily scratched and chipped (although please note that chipping and scratching can always occur from sudden impact, sharp objects or regular use of your bed). Our standard black finish is a 20% gloss finish. All other colors, including the raw clear coat are a semi-gloss (60-90%). Standard finish colors are selected at the time of order while custom colors must be noted in the additional notes section of the shopping cart during the checkout process. Custom colors MAY incur additional charges.

Raw Finish

Our raw finish process leaves much of the natural texture, light scratches and grind marks from the welding process in tact. We go over the furniture with scrotch brite pads to remove dirt and blend the grind areas as best we can, but it remains Raw with subtle changes in steel coloration around those grind areas. A final acetone wash is also done before it gets a final clear coat powder coat, but that's about it. It's a hand finished process so variations will occur from piece to piece based on the original condition of the steel. By no means is this finish a polished stainless finish. We make that distinction as some are surprised by how raw the resulting finish is, and we'd rather be upfront about that in the beginning, than have you disappointed when it arrives.

The Finish ProcessThe original raw color of the 3” steel tubing we use is gunmetal gray. Before any item is coated, it is cleaned of all dirt, grease, and residual oil on the metal surface through a fine sandblasting of the metal surface. The surface is then brushed free of any particles and any remaining moisture is dried. From here the parts are fully coated with the powdered pigment of your choice in the form of a thermoset polymer. Once coated, the parts are placed in a large industrial oven for processing and baking. The coating is then heated to 400+ degrees fahrenheit for 10-15 minutes. During this time, the thermoset polymer undergoes a molecular change. It does not just melt and then dry again, but rather, changes at the molecular level, each particle forming molecular bonds with every other surrounding particle to form a single seamless shell surrounding the metal frame. The shell is allowed to cool and is then removed, completely sealed from the elements. We allow 24 hours for the items to completely set, after which they are fully inspected for quality. They are then sent for packaging in preparation for shipment.

What is the current lead time on custom furniture if I place an order?

We are currently averaging 14-16 weeks from the time of order/payment (not including any potential holidays).

We adjust our production queue regularly based on order volume and production workflow.

Why does is take so long to produce an order?

The custom furniture we make is not carried in stock. The majority of our products are standard in design, BUT, each is made to order based on the design you choose, its size, and any additional options you have chosen to add to your order. We take care in hand crafting your items, and that care shows in the quality of the finished product that arrives into your home. Custom designs and modifications are always available and welcomed, but likely will require a phone or in-person consultation with one of our design experts to determine the specific needs and the feasibility of the project. All consultations are free of charge.*

Please be aware that we make every effort to deliver ahead of schedule, and more often than not, we do just that. But even the best laid plans have bumps in the road at times and while we understand we live in a fast-paced world, we are a small team of craftspeople that puts quality as priority #1.

At times, schedules do push longer due to unforeseen circumstances during production (huge waves of orders at once, outside partner delays for things like finish, out of stock specialty materials, etc.). We are also human. So colds, family matters (among other things) do pop up along the road and we simply ask that you factor this into expectations. We have never not delivered an order, so we're simply being upfront and letting you know that we do our best to provide accurate lead times in order to deliver on time - but life is unpredictable at best. Rest assured, your hand-crafted furniture will be worth the wait. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns and we'll do our best to accommodate your needs.

Our Ordering Process

The moment an order is placed, it is placed into our production queue to secure a production slot (learn more about our production process). Changes to the original order can be made up to 21 days after the original order date. If the order is placed online, you will receive an automatic confirmation from us about your order shortly after receipt of payment. Phone orders will receive a digital receipt and confirmation by email from our register. Please allow 2-3 days for order processing plus standard lead times noted for your item.

Our Platform Frame Option is constructed as a mattress-only style bed platform, for those who do not own, or do not wish to use a standard box spring on their bed.

We raise our bed rails to a height where a mattress would normally meet a box spring, and add additional slats to the bed rails for additional support to rest a rigid base, low profile (2-3") boxspring, or bunkie board underneath to protect the mattress (we recommend searching Amazon.com for bunkie boards based on the size of the bed you're ordering - sold separately and not included). With the standard platform option, we provide a modified bed rail height of 15" from floor which provides 12" of height under the bed rails. Adjustments to our standard height can be requested (higher or lower), but bear in mind the effect this might have on the foot board pattern, and your potential use of a sling at the foot of the bed.

When doing a custom platform height, we recommend telling us the height of the top of the mattress where you'd like your mattress to sit (from the floor to the mattress top), and the thickness of the mattress + any supporting material you intend to use. We'll then modify the rails to sit at the correct height to accommodate those needs.

For Full & Queen size beds, we provide a 7-slat support system (a strong 1" steel tube) evenly spaced. NOTE: we occasionally adjust this set-up to 5 slats, at our discretion, by substituting higher strength gauge steel - support strength remains the same.

For King and CalKing beds, we provide a 7-slat system (a strong 1" steel tube), but every other slat (#s 2, 4, & 6) will have a center support leg. If your mattress warranty requires anything else to maintain your warranty, please let us know your request during checkout and we will review your needs and confirm the details with you.

How do I assemble my bed?
   
Standard Bed Setup Instructions:
Please read all of these instructions prior to starting your installation. If you have any questions, please contact us at (415) 551-2337.

Preparation Instructions

Please be careful when moving bed parts, as these beds are made of steel, which are bulky and in some cases very heavy. Before installation or moving of any parts begins, be sure to have the following:

• This is not a job for one person. We STRONGLY recommend that this bed be installed by at least two persons.
• Your standard bed should include: one headboard, one footboard, two bottom rails (part with steel plates at both ends with three drilled holes), two top rails (part that is a hollow square tube with two holes drilled at both ends), and three steel slats (thin steel rails with small extension pieces on the ends)
• Your bed includes a packet of 16 - 3/8” bolts and 8 - hex set screws (a 1/8" hex wrench is required). Wrench not included.
• You will need a 9/16” wrench to tighten the 3/8” nuts for the lower bed rails (7/32" hex wrench for models built btwn 2012-2014). Wrenches not included.

Installation Instructions

1. Carefully remove all foam and packing material from all bed parts, being careful not to scratch the bed finish with any sharp instruments.
2. With the help of another person, carefully place the headboard (the heaviest piece of the bed) against the wall where your bed will be located, being careful to slightly lean the bed against the wall and leaving the headboard several inches from the wall (you can adjust the location of the bed later). One person now needs to remain with the headboard, holding it in place while the other begins the process of piecing the bed together.
3. With one person holding the headboard in place, the other person now needs to attach the bottom bed rails. The restraint hoops on the bottom rail should be to the outside position (on the left outer side for the left rail and on the right outer side for right rail).
4. Working one rail at a time, carefully align the end plate of the bottom rail against the screw plate at the foot of the headboard. Begin screwing-on the four (4) 3/8” bolts to the screws that attach the bottom rail to the headboard, there are two bolts on the bottom and two on top. IMPORTANT: Fasten ALL the bolts to the screws ONLY 50% tight - do not tighten the bolts all the way just yet. Move on to the second and final bottom rail and repeat step 4, tightening all four (4) bolts only 50% tight. You are now ready to begin attaching the footboard to the bottom rails.With all persons standing to the outside of the bed rails (not in the center area in front of the headboard), carefully assist your helper, gently releasing the headboard and allowing it to lean slightly forward away from the wall toward the front of the bed, being ready to grab the headboard if it leans forward too much.
5. With ALL of the bolts on, and partially tightened as outlined in Step 4, the headboard should comfortably lean and not fall forward, being held in place by the 8 bolts/screws and steel face plate. If it appears the headboard is leaning too much and you are not comfortable moving forward to the next step, repeat Steps 3 and 4, making sure the bolts applied in Step 4 are tightened more than they were tightened in your previous attempt. Otherwise, proceed to Step 6.
6. Utilizing your helper, carefully move the footboard into position with the screws facing inward toward the headboard. Carefully move the footboard to the ends of the bottom rails, aligning the plates on the footboard closely to the bottom rails’ steel plates. With your helper holding the footboard in place to prevent it from falling, begin lifting one of the bottom rails up. It may be heavy, and you will notice that the headboard will lift up as you lift the rail. Align the steel plate into the steel plate fitting of the footboard so the screws pass through the rail’s holes and attach the bolts to the bottom rail, being careful to tighten them at least 50% tight as you did in Step 4. Repeat this step with the other side and attach the remaining bolts, again, tightening the four (4) bolts only 50% tight. You are now ready to attach your top rails.*
7. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: Locate your two top rails. Carefully look for the location of the two drilled holes on either end. The side with the drilled holes is the bottom side of the top rail. NOTE: This part of the installation absolutely requires two persons. With each person taking hold of a top rail, with the bottom of the top rail facing down, both persons need to carefully and simultaneously insert the top rails over the protruding sleeve at the top of the headboard. Be sure to push the top rail completely over the sleeve so the edge of the top rail is snuggly against the headboard. While still holding the top rail firmly against the headboard, bring the other end of the top rail close to the sleeve fitting at the top of the footboard. You’ll notice that the rail has no way of fitting over the sleeve in its present state. NOTE: This is why the bolts on all four bottom rails are not tightened completely during installation, as you're spreading the bed apart to insert the rails onto the sleeves. Now carefully push the top rail toward the headboard so it begins to push toward the wall while simultaneously and gently pushing the footboard away from the headboard (be careful that your top rail does not slide off of the current sleeve of the headboard). The footboard sleeve is now pushing away from the remaining opening at the end of the top rail to allow you to fit the footboard sleeve into the top rail opening. When both sleeves are in the ends of top rails, bring the headboard back into its forward position and push the footboard toward the headboard to create a snug fit for your top rails into the sleeve fittings.
8. With your helper keeping an eye on the top rails to insure they are locked in position, begin tightening ALL the bolts on each of the four corners so they are completely tightened.
9. When all four corners are tightened on the bottom rails, align your top rails so they are flush to the outer posts (this may require a simple tap against the outer side of the top rail with your hand or a rubber hammer). Begin screwing-in the two (2) set screws on each of the four corners. Tightening these screws will “set” your top rails with the sleeves from the headboard and footboard, creating a snug and locked fit to your bed. Make sure the alignment is how you like it before tightening all the way.
10. Finally, take your bed slats and place them securely in the square notches along the bottom rails. This is your box spring support. After placing your slats in place, your bed is ready for its box spring and mattress.Carefully remove all foam and packing material from all bed parts, being careful not to scratch the bed finish with any sharp instruments.
11. Sling setup…well…we’ll leave that to you, as well as what comes thereafter! Enjoy your bed!

* PLEASE NOTE: occasionally customers encounter problems aligning the bolts into the holes of the bottom rail plates. If this occurs, it is likely due to either the alignment of your bed or and uneven floor or surface where the bed is being assembled. Look to make sure that the bed is being is aligned squarely at all corners and that the floor is as even as possible. This will ensure that your rails align properly in the holes of the steel plates. If you continue to have problems, please call us for assistance.

Beds Shipping

All bed shipments within the 48 contiguous states are subject to a flat rate fee of $450 for shipping & freight costs. This cost covers fuel surcharges, shipping fees, line-haul transportation charges, all required local and state tariffs, and full replacement value insurance coverage during shipment.

Any additional items or customizations that are added to your order carry a weight and dimension to your shipment. These weights are added to the cost to ship your order.

EFFECTIVE July 19, 2021

All bed shipments within the 48 contiguous states are subject to a base flat rate fee of $450 for shipping & freight costs. Additional accessories and items may add additional weight to your order and will scale upward accordingly. This cost covers fuel surcharges, shipping fees, line-haul transportation charges, all required local and state tariffs, and full replacement value insurance coverage during shipment based on your location being tractor trailer (18 wheeler accessible). If a smaller bob-cat truck is REQUIRED to deliver to your area, additional charges may apply. Please call us if you have any concerns regarding delivery to avoid any potential surprises. These rates have been calculated solely on bed weights, so additional add-ons or items in your order add weight, and in turn, will add cost to the overall shipment.

SCHEDULED DELIVERY OF YOUR FURNITURE INTO YOUR HOME REMAINS COMPLIMENTARY for all U.S. residents living within the 48 contiguous states unless otherwise noted. This means our furniture items are NOT dropped off at your front door or curbside, but rather, our moving professionals deliver them into your home. Deliveries into your home are made during normal business hours for the registered local delivery agent and include one (1) standard flight of stairs (i.e. to a second floor). Assembly is NOT included but can be requested for an additional charge that is collected from you (the customer) directly by the shipping company. Evening or special arrangements can also be made, but for an additional charge may apply as well. NOTE: Any

PLEASE NOTE: additional surcharges may apply for deliveries to customers living within major metropolitan areas or for customers who cannot accommodate a tractor trailer in their area or have other special delivery needs. These charges are the responsibility of the customer:

If you require special delivery needs at the time of delivery based on delivery challenges into your home that we are not made aware of at the time of purchase, *additional charges* for these services are at your expense. A partial list of examples are: extra staircases(first full flight of stairs is included), difficult turns in hallways/stairwells, low ceilings, tight street turns or private dirt roads to your home that cannot accept tractor trailers thus requiring a smaller truck, narrow cul-de-sacs, parking limitations in urban areas, hoisting through a window or door, to name a few we've encountered over the years.

IMPORTANT: Please inform the local dispatcher of any special needs when they call to confirm your delivery (we can notify our shipper in advance at the time of booking, but you know your home, so it's always good practice to share special circumstances with the local provider servicing your area prior to their arrival, should they need to make special arrangements to accommodate your needs).

UPS Shipping

All items shipped via UPS will ship via the UPS method selected during checkout. In some situations, a comparable method of transportation (Fedex, USPS, or other) may be used if it is necessary to meet customer timing requirements. Customers will be notified with a method of shipment and a tracking # (if applicable) upon shipment of their merchandise.

There is a 100% return policy for standard merchandise in stock in our inventory on all online orders placed with Urban Steel Designs, Inc. under the following guidelines:

• NOTE that most furniture items (unless otherwise noted) on our site are made to order and are not considered in stock inventory unless specifically noted. If you have a question on a furniture item's return policy, please contact us directly.
• Cancellations to custom furniture orders with a full refund can be made up to 14 days from your original purchase date. Cancellations up to 21 days are subject to a 25% materials and restocking fee, and any cancellations to custom furniture orders after 21 days are subject to a 50% fee for the cost of labor, materials and restocking. Please contact us if you have questions regarding this policy as we are certainly flexible based on individual circumstances.
• Changes to custom furniture orders can be made up to 7 days from original purchase date
• Standard merchandise returns must include original receipt and be made within 10 days of date of receipt unless otherwise approved by Urban Steel Designs, Inc.
• Returns without receipt will be issued store credit only.
• All special sale items, discontinued sale items and/or specially discounted purchases are final.
• Credit Card transactions are subject to credit card return fees of min. 5%

• All freight shipments are fully insured against damage, loss and theft during transit, please inspect all deliveries prior to sign-off. * Due to the logistics and weight of our products, we do not refund costs on freight, shipping and home delivery to you. Additionally, once your bill of lading (presented at the time of delivery) has been signed and approved, return shipments become the full responsibility of the customer and all items must be returned in original condition.

I understand that each bed or furniture item that I purchase from this site is not carried in stock by Urban Steel Designs, Inc., and that each piece of furniture is considered custom and made to order and subject to lead times based on how I configure the bed or furniture item (i.e. size, finish, accessories, etc.).

I understand there is a lead time for all beds and furniture orders and that Urban Steel Designs, Inc. will do it best to notify me of any dramatic changes to that estimated lead time. If the merchandise is done early, I have the right to delay delivery no more than 4 weeks from the original date of purchase.

I understand that placing my custom furniture order online requires full prepayment in order to be entered into a production queue that secures a production position with the current lead times. I also understand that I do have the option to place my order by phone to make alternative payment arrangements with Urban Steel Designs, Inc.

I understand that any additional shipping charges above and beyond the shipping services I have paid-for that may be required to deliver my merchandise due to my not fully familiarizing myself with the Urban Steel Designs, Inc. shipping guidelines, are at my expense and will be paid to the authorized delivery company directly to complete that delivery.

I have one staircase (14 total steps or less), or an elevator of appropriate size to accommodate my purchase into my home. I recognize that any additional shipping fees charged by STI (Meridian WW/STI) associated with additional stairwells or conditions that I have not disclosed may require me to pay additional shipping fees to Meridian WW/STI directly to complete my delivery.

I understand that I am required to fully inspect all furniture deliveries upon arrival and prior to signing the drivers receipt, that I will note any or all damages to packaging or merchandise prior to final sign-off. Otherwise, I will risk voiding my insurance and will be unable to file any insurance claims against Urban Steel Designs, Inc.

I understand that once I’ve scheduled in-home delivery, I am scheduling the time allotted with my delivery team. Any changes on my end must be communicated to the shipping (dispatch) person I made the appointment with and confirmed. If I miss my delivery appointment, or additional challenges in delivery that were perhaps not communicated at the time of order are discovered (i.e. tight stairwells, inaccessible areas, bed will not fit into home, etc.), those additional expenses become my responsibility and will be charged directly by the shipping company.

All Urban Steel Designs Outlet items, special sale items, discontinued sale items and/or specially discounted purchases are final.
